IBA Cities

The towns and cities applied to participate in the IBA Urban Redevelopment 2010 with a concept that took up the paradigmatic problems or specific potentials of their town and that formed a basis for long-term development pers- pectives. The profile was to indicate the original urban, economic, social, and cultural strengths of the town.

At the same time, it was to serve as a guideline for future structural and spatial development. Against this background, each IBA town and city prepared a theme for urban rede vel op ment that had to be relevant to the problems of urban shrinkage as a whole; the projects, methods, and processes were to be transferable to other towns and cities. The IBA steering committee decided which applicants would be accepted.

In 2003, Dessau-Roßlau, Aschersleben, and Lutherstadt Eisleben became the first participating towns. Further munic i pal- ities followed almost every year. The last to join were Naum- burg and Schönebeck in 2008. Meanwhile, nineteen towns and cities and nineteen themes form the panorama of the IBA Urban Rede vel opment 2010.
